Kite boarding is the water sport that is taken the world by storm,
and Cabarete is the place to be. This small Caribbean town is
world renown and has a reputation of having the very best conditions
in the world. Kite boarding attracts amateurs to the most expert
Kite boarders from all over the world.
Cabarete was host of the largest Kite boarding event in the World.
Every 3rd week of June, Kite boarders from around the world come
to Cabarete to compete in the prestigious event.
Then there are a few other good places to the East and to the
West of Kite beach. 'Bozo Beach', located between Cabarete and
Kite beach. is where the Kite boarding World Championship (2001),
World Cup (2002), and World Cup (2003) took place.
Encuentro Beach which is very popular with regular surfers in
the mornings when the waves are best, is still a great place for
wave riding in the afternoon when the winds pick up.
La Boca de Yasica is a great place with 100% flat waters and
once you played around for a while you can kite back to Cabarete
by going downwind with the trade winds for about 6km. However,
only experienced kiters should venture on this one. There are
a few other places that locals will be happy to point out to you.
There's
an agreement between the windsurfing schools and the kite surfing
schools that the latter will not teach and encourage kiting
in the bay (except Bozo Beach occupying the western side
of the Cabarete Bay). This is because the main bay is usually
too crowded with wind surfers on the water and people on
the beach.

It
is highly advised to get lessons if you are a beginner.
The best lessons can be found right on the Kite Beach. Before
you take on your board check the local restriction as laws
may prohibit riders who have not be trained. Always ask
the local riders about weather and water conditions, especially
the reef.

If you are new to Kite boarding and
coming to Cabarete, you shouldn't have a problem finding
vendors to buy basic gear. However finding spare parts
such as fins, bladders and others might be an issue. There
are Kite board and sail repair workshops in Cabarete. If
you cant take home your gear you will not have a problem
selling the used items as many people are looking for
great deals.
